I would like to be able to accurately control the playback speed of MP3 files and am hoping to find a media player that gives me the control that I need.

I am aware that you can use the '[' and ']' keys to speed up and slow down media playback using MPlayer, but these 10% speed jumps are rather too much for my needs. Ideally, I would like to be able to make 2-5% speed changes.

Does anybody know of either a setting that I could place into 'mplayer.conf' to alter the default 10% value, or of an alternate media player that offers greater control of playback speed?

Have you tried audacity? I can't remeber the speed steps but I'm pretty sure you can use small steps or even a slider. Try it out and let us know.
