computer acting weird

this is getting very annoying
whenever i'm in the middle of doing something, out of nowhere the screen will click and then it will show either a series of vertical lines that look like gradients, or a mixture of pixelated colors. it doesn't go away until i unplug the computer and restart (loosing all my work)

what would be the reason for this and how do i make it stop

  1. You are losing your work because you do not save it as you go along. Possible solution: adopt the habit of saving your work as you go along!
  2. It may be a hardware fault. Possible problem analysis: change a) the screen and, if that doesn't fix it, b) the video card for "known good" equivalents.

it shuts down before i get the chance i can save my work

plus that isn't the work i am doing you can't save it til its finished
ex:
-installing an os in virtualbox to run my peripherals that aren't compatible in linux
-skype calling
-downloading files with firefox
-installing new software

it also does this sometimes when i boot it up (verticle lines that look like gradients)
along with the sound not working until i run alsaconf in admin console, or just restart the system and cross my fingers that it works again

With distro are you using ?
Pclinux ?
You are aware that if you use Pclinux you should update pclinux at very regular basis to keep it stable.
Use the package manager to update it.
If you do not use pclinux with distro are you using ?
A other possibility is that is something wrong with you graphic card or monitor

just to test try running at lower res, maybe lower color depth and 60HZ refresh and disable all 3d effects
just to see if it fixes it
maybe you are overdriving it?

just re-installed it and declined the choice of removing drivers before the installation, and went to synaptic and downloaded all of the nvisia drivers that i could find (surely one of them was going to work) i haven't had any problems so far
