Compiz from scratch - what is needed to get it working?
I have compiled and installed compiz, emerald, some other packages which seem to be connected with compiz, but when i start compiz --replace, nothing happens and windows don't show anything and have no decorations until i press Ctrl+C.
What do i have to install to make compiz at least show decorations and update windows contents? And then, to make some compositing magic (cube, etc.)?

You have to be a bit more specific. What distribution are you working with (your profile lists three), what packages have you installed, how exactly do you start it etc...

What distribution are you working with

what packages have you installed
Well, since i installed compiz 0.6.2 no new installed package changed compiz's behavior, so i should have installed nothing what is needed to make it work.

how exactly do you start it etc...
compiz --replace

I also tried to start it in separate X server from xterm, and what i see is white window of xterm (now xterm window does update - it didn't before X update) and black background after compiz startup and until Ctrl+C (before startup - normal xterm and default black&white background pattern). If i press Ctrl+Alt+F7 to change to first X server, it doesn't work. In fact, both servers crash, so i have to login via ssh and restart one.
If i start
compiz --replace --bg-image some_image.png
it doesn't draw this image on background - just black.

OK. I found the reason of compiz not working. I had to start compiz this way:

compiz --replace ccp
This would make it use configuration (via CCP) including plugins.
And then i had to issue

to spawn window decorations. That's all there is to it.
