Compiz, Beryl, CompizFusion a few questions about the three?
 

Ok I am just trying to figure out what the difference between these are. Here is what my understanding is and I was wondering if any one could make things a little more clear if I have some things incorrect or mission.

The first project was compiz then beryl branched out because of major changes in the core code?

Now CompizFusion is in short merging beryl and compiz ideas together?

Beryl has the WM emerald, while compiz uses what ever WM? So what does CompizFusion use?

Beryl is no longer developed, all of the code and features developed from the Beryl project merged with the Compiz project to create CompizFusion. CompizFusion is now the only real choice for advanced 3D desktop acceleration. You can still use old versions of Beryl, and you can use the core Compiz that comes with X (which allows for 3D effects, but is not nearly as capable as CompizFusion), but all new development is done in CompizFusion.

As for the WM, Beryl/Compiz/CompizFusion are the window managers. Emerald is just a decorator that allows for different title bar effects and such.

Thats what I thought but I was a little lost with everything and still am since I cant seem to find source for compizfusion or a way to install it on slackware.

You will need to build CompizFusion, the support libraries, and various plugins, from source on Slackware. Slackbuilds.org has build scripts for all the required programs.

After building them all, installation is very straight forward. You just replace the existing Compiz that ships with Slackware with the new packages. I have CompizFusion with XFCE running on Slackware -current now (which isn't really much different from 12.1 yet) very nicely.
