Changing GTK1 theme colors, How?

I'm trying to find a way to change the colors of GTK1 themes, to match a few GTK2 themes.

Specifically a few Clearlooks themes. The colors do not have to be exact, but it would be nice if the GKT1 themes atleast had a similar color scheme.

I've tried editing the gtkrc file for the themes, but I can never get the colors I want, and half the time I break the theme.

Anybody know what the rules are?

Only caps? (ie, "#FFFFFF" not "#ffffff"). Only colors supported by the theme?

What is the range?
