I found I can't use mate anymore through remote desktop (both VNC and x2go) after upgrading from 1.14 to 1.16.0 on Debian testing. When I try to connect, all I can see is black background and applications started from saved session. I got identical lines from either protocol:

Remote connection is established while a local mate session is running. But everything was fine before upgrade.
