cannot start X Windows gui in vmware

I just finished installing Redhat 9 onto VMWare Workstation. I was able to install the VMWare tools but cannot seem to get into the x windows gui.

I try to type in startx but it returns with:
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
Fatal server error:
no screens found
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"

I then try redhat-config-xfree86 and it does give me a mouse so I can click on what resolution to set my display to. I tried the default of 800x600 with 24bit and also 32bit but always get the following:

/usr/share/redhat-config-xfree86/xconf.py:1238: DeprecationWarning:
self.xml.get_widget("display_dialog").set_uposition(xpos, ypos)

Either way, I cannot get into X windows GUI.

Please help.

Thanks!

... I know this question is going to come up but I have to ask ... why are you installing Red Hat 9, as it is such an outdated distribution version.

It's for a vmware lab i'm doing. I'd love to use something more like Gentoo but I need a linux distro that's most commonly used in the workplace.

I would suggest CentOS ... as it is based on the the current Red Hat Enterprise 5.
