Cannot get GUI on any linux distro (live, install gui nor post install) 8800GTX
 

Hey guys, I am trying to install fedora core 9, or more importantly anything on my machine and i just cant get a gui at all. I have a 8800GTX EVGA Card PCIEx16 and i just cant get it to do anything other than these given situations...

Live CDs: loads at init 3
Anaconda install GUI: fails over to text
Post text install driver update: no change

When I go to init 5 on any occasion then i get a black screen w/monitor on and no further response. I can ssh back into the box if linux is installed w/no gui but if i init 3 the box again then the box stays unresponsive and i have to reset.

Please be kind if i have missed an existing thread on this one, it seems that it would be a common problem but i can find almost no matching scenarios where the solution helps in any way.

What driver do yo have?

Type at the command prompt
sudo vim /etc/X11/xorg.conf
(assuming you are using X.org)

and change your driver to vesa.

Then type startx.

This has always worked for me.
