Can we run kdesktop with only the icons, and not the wallpaper?


This is purpose:
slow computers

Yes. Go into kcontrol (control center). Click on Appearance & Themes -> Background -> No picture -> Apply

Repeat for each desktop.

Is there any particular reason why you want to run kdesktop and not something lighter like idesk?

As far as I know, if kdesktop manages the desktop then it will draw the background as well. Even if it's just a solid color. If you want a solid color then you can set kdesktop to draw that instead of a bitmap, as someone else instructed you above.

You can also try "blackbox" desktop manager.
