Calibrate monitor

I am using Kubuntu 16.04.1 and my monitor is not calibrated quite correctly so when I edit photos they don't look quite right.
I have googled but without success, any ideas how to do this?

you need an extra piece of hardware to create some sort of color profile for your monitor by physically pointing it at the monitor.
it is possible that your photos also provide some data, but neither your photos/camera nor your computer can know what it really looks like on the monitor.
