Can you get into BIOS? That's F1 or F8 for Compaq, usually. If not try another monitor or keyboard. Any beeps during startup?

Can we assume you don't have any video?

Power button, button electrical path, power supply. Do any fans work? Jumper electrical connector to try to start if and I say IFFFF it is the kind that can be jumpered.

Since you mention the VGA cable, I'm guessing this is a desktop.

Do you have another monitor to test with? It's possible the problem lies with the monitor.

Here is how to check to see if you have a power supply problem:

We have a desktop 300 GB HD, OS W7. After receiving an email first had a screen with a lot of horizontal lines going on, thereafter screen went black. Tried to restart normal and with F8 even F2 but screen stays dead, machine fans working. Tried another monitor an other VGA cable and another keyboard. Then opened pc case and took out battery for at least half hour. Nothing still not even a light signal on keyboard. Any suggestions how to solve ?
thanks,
miramarcos

Fans working means at least part of psu works. Get a vom and check other power outs.

Don't waste time with battery.

Review web pages on basic items needed to do pre-post as I doubt you even get to post.

A jumper is a small switch which is toggled by "jumping" (establishing a connection) between two pins. The little bit which provides the connection allows the circuit to "jump" across the pins, so it's referred to as a "jumper."

With the switch "jumpered," the device is set in one state; with it not "jumpered," the device is in the opposite state. In the old days, when you had two physical hard drives in a computer, the one you were booting from was jumpered to be the "master"; the other one would have to be set as the "slave."

This link has a nice diagram to illustrate:

You may have to use the Fn key along with the F1 key.

If you have an added video card, check to see that it is seated properly, or remove it and try the other video connection.
