Boot options(F9) does not show DVD...
Hello Linux Gurus,
Hope am posting my problem in the right forum. I am using Ubuntu 8 desktop. I recently purchased a DVD R/W. I am trying to install other distros using a bootable DVD. When I go into boot options using F9, I don't see DVD option. Is there a way to enable this? Thanks a lot! Srinivas |
How to enable DVD under boot options (F9).
Hello Linux Gurus,
I am using Ubuntu 8 desktop. I recently purchased a DVD R/W. I am trying to install other distros using a bootable DVD. When I go into boot options using F9, I don't see DVD option. Is there a way to enable this? Thanks a lot! Srinivas |
You want to install other distros along-side Ubuntu on the same machine? Like a dual boot? So, you need to boot your other DVD using the new DVD drive, right?
Sounds like the F9 option you are selecting is an Ubuntu Boot Menu option (if I'm wrong please say so), and what you really want, is to look in your computer's BIOS to see that the DVD drive is set to boot from. BIOS configs vary from one machine to the next, but some machines allow you to press something like F-11 when you turn it on, and get a boot menu right from your BIOS, which allows you to select which device to boot from. If you do not have something like this, then again, go into the BIOS right after power-up and make sure the DVD drive is set to boot from; then, stick the DVD in the drive and turn the machine on, and the DVD should start. If I've misunderstood your situation, please clarify some more. |

Depends on a few things.
One is how bios see's it. Can you view bios and does it report as a dvd? Second is if the system bios even knows enough to boot from a dvd. Third is order. Some bios's only allow the master ide to boot. Lastly may be that you need to test this dvd on some other system, right now we can't say if it is good. |
You might have to go to the bios setup screen and change the boot order/enable of the DVD drive.

When I press F1, I see an error screen momentarily. The screen stays for fraction of a second for me to even get a glance of the error message. When I press F9, I get a list of devices to boot from. Here is what I see: Press Enter to select IPL Device, ESC to Exit CD-ROM Floppy Drive (A:) USB Device Hard Drive (C:) IBA 4.1.08 Slot 0540 Thanks a lot for all your replies. Can you guys give me any more ideas/tips on how to enable my DVD drive so I can install a distro? |

The DVD drive is brand new. HP dvd 1140i. The ubuntu detects the drive as I see the light on the drive. When I press F1 or F11, I see an error screen momentarily. The screen stays for fraction of a second for me to even get a glance of the error message. All I could see was the heading: "301 keyboard error" When I press F9, I get a list of devices to boot from. How Old Is This Computer, Any Chance it's an old AT Style?
Hope you are reading This Post,You Should not post the same Question in two places on the Forum |
First, the keyboard error: Google tells me it can be one of several things, some of which may depend on how old the computer is.
1) Possibly stuck key in keyboard (or false error because you're pressing F9 or whatever during boot). 2) Dirty inner keyboard parts, such as the connector where the cable inside the keyboard is attached. 3) Bad keyboard connector on the motherboard (try a USB keyboard or replace motherboard :/). If the keyboard otherwise seems to work OK, I'd ignore the error for the time being. But if it persists when no keys are pressed during power-up, consider trying a working keyboard from another computer, and see what happens.) ------------ Second.. The DVD drive: Is this a PATA/IDE connected drive, or a SATA drive? I'm guessing PATA, the type with the wide flat ribbon-cable connecting it to the motherboard? If so: 1) make sure it's not connected to the same cable as your CD-ROM drive, since having two optical drives on one cable can possible cause problems. As a last resort, for testing, remove your CD-ROM drive and connect only the DVD. 2) Verify that the jumper or switch(es) on the back end of the DVD drive are set to <M> or <Master> if it is the only device on the cable, and that it is connected to the END connector on the ribbon. If there is already a master device (like a hard disk) on this same cable, then the DVD should be in the MIDDLE connector on the ribbon, and the jumper or switches on the back should be set to <S> or <Slave>. 2.b) If it's a SATA drive, with a small skinny (1/4 inch) cable connecting it, then the above steps do not apply. 3) Enter the BIOS of the computer (check your user manual or Google for your motherboard to figure out how to enter BIOS if you don't know) and make sure that the DVD drive appears in some portion of the BIOS menus, either in the "Boot Devices" area, or in the "Hard Drive & Optical Drive Configuration" area. By following 1, 2, and 3 above, you should be able to get the DVD drive recognized by the BIOS, and be able to boot from it. If you still have no luck, re-read step one, and switch out your CD drive and put the DVD there instead and see how that works. If not, I'd investigate updating your BIOS, if there is a BIOS upgrade to be had for your machine. If still no luck, please tell us what kind of computer it is, what make & model of motherboard if you know that, and how old the machine is. ------ Finally: You wrote: Quote:
So far, I see no evidence that Ubuntu sees the drive, although it *probably* does -- to test this, boot Ubuntu, and from your desktop, try ejecting the DVD drive, and/or putting some media into it and playing it. Does this work? Keep us posted, and good luck! |
Hi Sasha,
Nothing is working. I went into the BIOS, even the BIOS shows IDE CD-ROM First Diskette Drive second USB Third Hard Drive Fourth Compaq Ethernet controller Fifth I even tried your suggestion. There was a cable (with 4 inputs) to the CD ROM Drive. I removed that and inserted into DVD drive. When I turn on the system, I see DVD is recognized and shows the details for the DVD drive. I could atleast see the BIOS information: Compaq EVO D510 CMT |
