beryl xgl suse 10.1 not working

i just installed beryl and xgl and can't seem to get beryl to run
well actually, if i run beryl-manager it will start but nothing really happens except that title bar around my windows looks different. when i try to run beryl-settings nothing ever happens.
i can't seem to figure out what the problem is.
i know that my graphics card is supported by xgl because i used to use compiz. in fact xgl has only worked in the past with the version of compiz that comes on the suse 10.1 cd. if i download the new version of compiz-quinn that has the same effect as beryl... do i just need to update my system? or is there a setting wrong somewhere
if you need any more information to help me with my inquiry just ask, as of right now im not sure what else to say
