Question Beryl Nvidia Slow performance


I have had Beryl running on my AMD Athlon 3200+ with an Nvidia 6800 GT for some time. This is running Fedora 7 and I have been using the drivers and kernels provided.

So currently this is 2.6.22.5-76.fc7 kernel and the 100.14.11 version of the NVidia driver.

I just noticed a few days ago that spinning the cube is now very slow. When I run glxgears it returns something like this:
1250 frames in 5.0 seconds = 249.818 FPS

The performance used to be much better. At least I could spin the cube without problems. So I have no idea what's happend.

Any idea what I should do to improve the situation? Performance is much better if I switch from Beryl to Metacity, but I obviously want the 3D desktop.

I'd suggest you re-install the driver. That performance is consistent with software rendering on that CPU, not hardware rendering on the GPU. If it's still slow, post the /var/log/Xorg.0.log (in a code block, not a quote block).

There are problems with the nVidia driver (the "black window" bug), which appear to indicate that memory management for the graphics card is broken.

Workarounds are available in beryl, requiring you to fiddle with a number of beryl settings, and take some specific actions in xorg.conf.

Also, I have found that over time, there is a memory leak in beryl, or one in X, or some combination, such that eventually beryl slows down considerably, while at the same time memory usages creeps up and up and up apparently without limit.

To deal with this problem, I use beryl-manager to restart beryl daily, and I have to restart X about once a week on my 2 gig system to clean things out.

From beryl-manager, I usually get the best performance by setting:

Rendering Path = Texture from Pixmap
Composite Overlay Window = Automatic
Rendering Platform = Force AIGLX (note: force NVIDIA invokes the black window bug)
Binding = XGL
Rendering = XGL Rendering


There are some issues with compiz 0.5.2 that seem to impact my distro, so I still use beryl. The black window bug is nVidia's to fix; the other issues I expect will vanish as compiz matures.

The black window bug is (for most cases) resolved with the current (100.14.19) driver.

I have downloaded the latest 100.14.19 from nvidia.com and installed it after removing the yum-installed slightly older versions.

I deliberately left out the "NvAGP" "0" setting seem to disable AGP according to the driver readme (Appendix B), that would make it slower wouldn't it?

I still think it was faster before, but I might be remembering back to when I had a custom built kernel a few months ago. So that might be next, compile my own kernel again.

I am also thinking about the new Compiz Fusion, but I might leave it a little longer to stabilize.

Anything else I can do to speed this system up?

No. Chances are that you're not going to use it even if you are using an AGP card anyway. See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NvAGP
I just have a habit of specifically declaring setting I want to be sure are put into place, but this should be a default setting anyway.

I'd suggest you install the Livna repo (livna.org) and install the nvidia driver from there. This way, when you get your next kernel update, you won't have to go messing with the driver again. In fact, if you install that repo, then just "yum install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia", that will give you everything you need.

Well now. This is brand new. I had installed the previous driver (100.14.13 I think it was) and uninstalled it because of multiple problems (which I reported). I am presently running 1.0-9755. I'll have to check out the new one.

I just found out something.

I run this command: cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status

The result is:

So, AGP is used. AGPART is the kernel provided one. I guess it might be a setting in the kernel .config to enable fast writes (if I wanted to experiment...).

So in any case I will keep my default setting of "NvAGP" "3".

The black window bug is a memory management issue for Nvidia cards. Depending on the amount of video memory and configuration, the driver would run out of memory when running a compositing window manager (Compiz, Beryl). When that happens, all new windows open filled with black (no visible contents).

Be aware that enabling fast writes on a system the driver thinks shouldn't can destabilize it.

Yes, I probably will file a report once I have it sorted out a bit better. In my case, the bug does not appear until some time after X is started. Prior to that time, I can open windows pretty much indefinitely.

There is also a problem with viewing video with the new driver; the rastport seems to get corrupted (not sure what it is called in X, but the "rastport" is the actual memory that displays the video on the screen). This problem seems to be "corrected" if I use krandrtray to "resize" my display. The resize fails to occur and the rastport problem vanishes for awhile. Also, with this driver, I have confirmed a memory leak in xorg 7.2. Since 7.3 is now available I will wait a short while to see if Mandriva provides an RPM; if not, I'll compile and install it.

This is KDE 3.5.7, beryl, xorg 7.2 on kernel 2.6.17.

Also, with this driver, I have confirmed a memory leak in xorg 7.2. Since 7.3 is now available I will wait a short while to see if Mandriva provides an RPM; if not, I'll compile and install it.

This is KDE 3.5.7, xorg 7.2 on kernel 2.6.17.
Not having any problems here with video, windowed or full-screen. Even the glitches when playing video with a composting manager (Compiz/Beryl) are corrected.

No memory leak here either, with this configuration: Fedora Core 6, Gnome 2.16.3-1, Xorg 7.1-3, Kernel 2.6.22.5-49, Beryl 0.2.0-1. I been running a logged-in console session continuously since Nvidia released the driver, and memory hasn't creeped at all.
