ATI - AMD Driver Mint 12

Any word out as to a fix for the video drivers for Mint 12 (Gnome 3)? I have a new build with a Radeon HD 6570 GPU and found out from some posts on the Net that something's "broken" re ATI drivers and Gnome 3. I haven't found any posts re a fix by the good people working on Gnome and/or AMD/ATI.

I've also ran into trouble installing CreBS. In the last step it tells me it can't find the package. I did things in the terminal the same way I've done four or five times in the past, copying and pasting commands from the HowToGeek website where I first learned of CreBS. Is this another bug with Mint 12, or have they modified CreBS somehow and the package has a different name?

For your drivers, read up on the NVIDIA drivers on sourceforge.net - just a suggestion.

Why should he read up for NVidia? The OP is using an AMD GPU.

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit and just upgraded my graphics to a Sapphire HD6670. Works fine with the AMD Catalyst drivers v11.12 (from the AMD site) although I had some teething trouble which resulted in removing all nVidia drivers first and then reinstalling Catalyst. Works really well now.

However...I am considering upgrading to Mint 12/Gnome Shell and I am afraid it will all go horribly wrong. As a trial I tried installing the AMD drivers in my OpenSuSE 11.4 32-bit installation and after some bigger problems it booted into the gui desktop once but ever since it hangs during boot with a black screen.

So I second the request to know what the situation is.

I am under the impression (mistaken?) that the NVidia drivers work for several of the GPU cards. Note that I recommended reading up, not blind install.
Best

Your impression is really mistaken. NVidia GPUs need the NVidia driver, AMD/ATI GPUs need the AMD driver. Or their free counterparts. The only exception is the vesa driver, which should work with any GPU, regardless of manufacturer and model.

I got OpenSUSE 11.4 to boot. I had to delete /etc/X11/xorg.conf via another OS. This got me to a text login and I was able to uninstall fglrx. I then reinstalled a version using instructions here:
http://lizards.opensuse.org/2010/07/...rs-under-11-3/

Now it boots ok and seems to work fine in "Gnome" but has the occasional graphics smearing in "Gnome3 preview". I have only spent a few minutes looking at it. I'm going to quit while I'm ahead. ;)

Radeon Driver

I also had problems getting my HD6670 card to work. There is a lot of useful information here
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver
which enabled me to get my card working

My system sometimes hangs with a black screen at boot but I have found that a quick press of the power button causes the system to resume booting (I have no idea why!)

I have now installed Mint12 32-bit and Mint12 64-bit in separate partitions. Both function with the default drivers (I have not attempted to install the AMD proprietary ones listed in 'additional hardware'). Mint 32 seems to work just fine and I am using it with Cinnamon, which is a nice desktop IMO. However, I have seen unique problems with 64-bit Mint12:
- It more often than not boots up missing the sound icon in the panel.
- It freezes up for 10s of seconds at a time
- My webcam is intermittently recognized after boot
- When my webcam is recognized and the sound icon is there, the icon for my webcam is different than it is using 32-bit Mint12. In 32-bit it has a rectangular camera icon and in 64-bit it has a spherical icon. This seems highly suspicious to me. I assume 32 and 64 should perform identically in this regard.

Again, in 32-bit Mint12 all appears fine. So I am not going to upgrade from Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit to Mint12 64-bit until these critical problems are resolved. I shall wait until the release of the next AMD linux drivers (due this month?) and try again.

32-bit vs 64-bit

Hi,
As you know, I'm not necessarily the go-to guy on this stuff, but I do know that on Weiners(that other OS), some of my drivers are 32-bit and some 64. These are placed in different program folders with different properties. No specifics on what those are though.
