anyone run "win mobile activesync" under Wine?
 

Most mobile phones have win-doze apps [Activesync(tm), etc] to manage and backup their contents.

Has anyone had success running these phone-sync apps under wine?

Unfortunately, it seems that the answer is "no." It does, apparently, install, but that's it.

I believe there are USB issues with Wine. Do I understand this correctly?
Is this one of those troubles or is something else going on?

Well, it may be. As far as I know, WINE does not directly implement USB. That is to say, it will not use a DOS/Windows driver to utilize a USB device. The Linux kernel must first support the device, and then it can be used with any DOS/Windows software that needs it.

You may be able to work out a fancy-pants solution for a USB device with NDISwrapper, but that would certainly go outside of my knowledge level. I'm not even sure that this will work with anything other than network devices.

I understand that the kernel must first understand USB devices and hubs and such at the driver level before other software might try to use them. I have no idea what ActiveSync(tm) on win-dose expects to see when you connect a phone using USB so I don't know if there are special requirements for parts between ActiveSync and the driver presentation of the phone's USB connection. Some part of it ought to be similar to any other usb-connected storage
-- to access internal store and external media store on the phone.

I'm only interested in getting music and pix to and from the phone in addition to keeping my contacts, calendar, and tasks up-to-date between the phone and my desktop.

The whole phone-as-modem (as in dial-up) and phone-as-network (as in broadband internet) are complete mysteries to me.
