Question Adding screen resolutions in Fedora 14

Hi,
I installed Fedora 14 on my laptop yesterday. But I am not able to set the resolution I prefer. I see that the resolutions displayed for choice are 800X680, 1024X768, 1449X1024. These are the only three options available. I would like to have resolution of 1280X768 or 1366X768. But I dont know the procedure to add these resolutions as well. I tried to look for /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, but it was not found. 'system-config-display' seems to be deprecated in Fedora 14. Xorg -configure is trying to dump exception saying X server is already running.
If I set my resolution to 1024X768, I see the borders blanked out, which I feel very uncomfortable to view.
Could you please guide me as to how do we add screen resolutions to Fedora 14. I am a newbie and so I would request you to provide me a step-by-step procedure for this, please.

Kindly help.

Regards,
Sreeram

recent versions of Xorg don't really need a config file, it can auto-detect pretty well.

you can create a default config file (pretty much the same config as with no config file) with

$ X -configure

then edit this file to your needs, making sure your desired (and exotic) resolution is present.

you might also want to check with

$ xrandr

and see what resolutions are available

How to create xorg.conf
From FedoraProject
Jump to: navigation, search

Fedora releases since Fedora 10 do not create a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, used to configure the X server, by default. The X configuration is automatically determined each time X is started. In most cases, this works well and there is no need to manually specify X configuration information.

If you need to make manual changes to X configuration for any reason, you will first need to create a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.
Xorg -configure

You can create a basic xorg.conf using the X executable itself. As root run:

Xorg :1 -configure

This will create the file /root/xorg.conf.new, which you can then copy to /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
