I'm running several different distro's of Linux; SUSE 8.2 & 9.1, Ubuntu 6.10, Scientific Linux. Clicking on "My computer" under SUSE 8.2 the hard drive comes up along with CD, DVD and floppy drives. Not so on the other machines - they only show the removable media drives. How do I get the hard drives to show on the other distro's in the equivilant of "My Computer"? I'm presuming I need to mount them? If so, why are the removable drives showing up and neither the hard drive or it's partitions?
This is because in most distros, drives mounted anywhere other than inside /media or /mnt and unmounted media aren't shown by default. In KDE, you will need to right-click the desktop, select "Configure Desktop," and click the "Device icons" tab, and check all of the types of media you want visible.
Hmmm.....I've gone in the desktop, clicked device icons The "mounted hard disk partitions" was checked; for grins I checked the "unmounted hard disk partition", even though it's a single drive with only SUSE on it. Anyway, the CD and floppy are the only ones to show up yet. Am I missing something?

Try unchecking, applying, and then rechecking "mounted hard disk partition" and applying to fix this in KDE. This is a known bug, I believe, and should be fixed by 4.0 (next release).
Not so sure in GNOME, as I never use it. Try looking around in the GNOME settings--its probably there somewhere.
