[ubuntu 10.04] root auto login to console mode


as subject, how can i boot to console mode with root auto login after complete the ubuntu 10.04 installation.

Are you sure you want to login automatically without entering the password? And that too a root user? DANGEROUS. Is not it?
And anyhow, root password is not set in Ubuntu by default. You will need to set it. But I doubt you will need it. sudo should allow you to do all the administrative tasks.

I really need a way to automatically login to text mode in ubuntu 9.10 because of job demand...it's enmergency..can somebody help me(

Fine then did you try mailing the problem to their mailing list ?

Also do tell them what all you tried which didn't work !

For Ubuntu 10.04 the file that we are looking for is located at /etc/init/tty1.conf

In this file you have to replace

exec /sbin/getty 38400 tty1
With

Quote:
exec /sbin/mingetty --autologin USERNAME tty1
and your done.

I found this out by using the
Quote:
locate
command to find the tty1 files that apparently moved to a different location in newer Ubuntu distributions.
