Suggestions Needed
 

I really want to try and get certified in something. I have gotten a book and looked thru Linux+. I'm working on the Orielly's book for the LPIs. I have also looked into Novell's Certs concering linux (I'm starting to really love Suse). I know a decent amount of things about linux. I wouldn't consider myself a genius but I can do alot of basic tasks and run alot of basic services (qmail,apache,squid,snort). I am leaning towards going for LPI level 1. However the one major concern I have is finding study material. Since they do not recomend anything how would I make sure what I am studying is going to be on the test? (Thats why I envy the CISCO people because cisco puts out their books :P). Is the LPI the best test for me to take so I can get my feet wet? Is there another linux based cert test with books I know of that could help me study? (Please don't tell me redhat..they leave a bitter taste in my mouth for some reason). So anyone got any suggestions for a linux geek wanting to learn more and get his cert? Or wanna tell me things that wont make me scared to do it. :P

I feel the same way. I've googled for some online training courses but don't find any that look like fit the bill. I took a lot of IT classes in College but everything was m$ except for the programming (gcc). How's that for backwards! I made it through the Windoze classes without learning a darned thing. (of course there were some students that even struggled with those) I'm thinking I may need to just read, read, read and do, do, do.

I'm going to try LFS before I take any exam. Maybe a Gentoo install also. I'm on the look out for the LEAST newbie friendly distro (But it must be stable; no company is going to hire me because I use an unstable system. I can already do that - m$)

I would recommen starting by building yourself a nice working Gentoo system. You'll likely learn a lot. Once you've mastered that, try an LFS setup. Best way I know to learn Linux from the inside out is to build it yourself.

I'm currently (as I'm typing this) compiling another Gentoo as I am just not quite happy with the Debian I am using now. LFS will be my next project. I have a lot of time while I recouperating from a car wreck so am putting it to good use :)
