RHCE and RHCSA
hi guys, what's the pre requisite for the two certs?
RHCSA the RHCE? or what? |
i check red hat site:
Windows system administrators: Red Hat System Administration I (RH124) Red Hat System Administration II with RHCSA Exam (RH135) Linux or UNIX administrators: RHCSA Rapid Track Course with Exam (RH200)* to become RHCSA: can go for RH200 or take the two path RH124 and RH135? am i correct with my understanding? Thanks :) |
To have a valid RHCE you need to have a valid RHCSA.

You replied to yourself while I was answering.
You don't need any certification to take/earn RHCSA. Make sure you know the material and sign up for the exam. |
thanks for the replies guys, i must admit i'm a windows guy.
the two way path should be better right: Red Hat System Administration I (RH124) Red Hat System Administration II with RHCSA Exam (RH135) These two exam will eventually lead to RHCSA right? |

Assuming that you have Linux (preferably RedHat/CentOS) knowledge I wouldn't invest in those 2 and do the following: - Make sure you know what the RHCSA objectives are (re-check regularly, they might change over time), - Buy, beg for or borrow RHCSA/RHCE Red Hat Linux Certification Study Guide (Exams EX200 & EX300), - Load RedHat/CentOS and start doing the exercises. Depending on your current knowledge, you'll be ready in a few weeks/months to take the RHCSA exam. The biggest problem during the exam isn't the material itself but the time you have to do all the assignments. |
I do have the EX200 and EX300 materials from a friend, i have a laptop which should be good enough to handle VMs.
But I want to assemble a new desktop (if budget allows) or i'll try to find a second hand desktop which should be good enough to load CentOS or RedHat. Wheew..this would be a new journey.. Thanks druuna. |

1 - multi-boot system (RHEL 6 being one of the options), 2 - base: minimal graphic RHEL 6 with KVM, 3 - running (at times multiple) VM's from the base system. The above makes sure you are using a 100% RedHat environment. Quote:

that's a good setup.
That's why I want to get a new or old desktop that can install Redhat. Because if only VM, I might not be able to install KVM. I'm not sure whether we can run a virtual machine on the top of another virtual machine. hehehe.. i guess that would not be possible as of this moment. Thanks again :) |

This is how i practiced |
Thanks for the input CodeFreaker, we can get an evaluation software for RHEL 6 right?

RedHat download page: RedHat Downloads (You do need an account to access the actual download url's). Once you have downloaded and installed RHEL you might want to have a look here: RHEL local DVD Repo If you feel uncomfortable using RHEL you can use either of these: - CentOS - Scientific Linux The above 2 are free and almost fully compatible with RHEL. |

hmmm..i hope to nail RHCSA.. but i'm still doing MCSE...next in line RHCSA.. so RHCSA expire in 3years or what? |
Quote:
If you still have to do MCSE, you might want to wait until RHEL 7 is released (which might be upon us very soon now). |

I understand that this thread is marked as >solved<, anyway I rather ask the question here than open a new one, with a almost same topic....
Browsing training & exam sections on redhat's site it is not clearly said that RHCSA and RHCE is available for folks that do not have 124 or 135 or any other redhat training. Calling both a "prerequisite" is same as "mandatory". So since I was unsure, I requested information, via email directly from redhat: Quote:
and here is the response: Quote:
Again, he/she ( I hope not an automated response, after 6 hrs ) is mentioning "prerequisites", which does not mean "optional" or "suggested", but simply is a "requirement". I am still confused and I feel like sitting in front of a monitor hooked up to a Microsoft Windows (8) machine. I really like druuna's 3rd post / answer, but the information on RH site just does not confirm it, or the wording is simply wrong. On the other hand, I am sure that RH would rather have me going through all the training, but I do not see a smallest reason to spend $10K+ to just get a single, $400 certification I need or want... Thanks everyone! Mike |
@paziulek: As a non native English speaker I'm not going into the nitty-gritty of the English (American?) language, but I am sure about the following:
- From personal experience (and seeing many colleague's do the same thing): You do not need any extra, paid for, training/certificate(s) to take the RHCSA exam. If, looking at the exam objectives, your knowledge is good enough then you can take the exam. - You need to have a valid RHCSA certificate to get the RHCE certificate. But you do not need a valid RHCSA certificate to take the RHCE exam. Or phrased differently: You can take the RHCE exam and pass, but the actual certificate will not be awarded to you until you pass the RHCSA exam. This makes it possible to take the RHCSA and RHCE exam on the same day. Is it wise to do some preparations before the exam(s)? Yes, especially when it comes to RHCE. How you prepare and which resources you use are completely up to you. I personally liked the RHCSA/RHCE study guide (see post #6 for the link). It gave me a rough idea what the exams would look like and pointed out which objectives needed some work. Remember: These certificates are there to validate what you've learned as a system administrator over the years. Taking the RHCSA exam shouldn't be too hard (time constrains aside), just make sure you catch up on those objectives that are "rusty". |

Perfect! I am really glad to hear the great news! As you suggested, I will spend some time with objectives and study guides before an exam. Often feeling too comfortable is a bit foolish. Every day people are required to redo their driver's license after driving a car for 20 years - many fail the test. Thank you again druuna, for the priceless information and good advices! Mike |
