2) What do employers for whom you might consider working and who might consider employing you want for certification?
If your current or perspective employer is running a lot of high-end Red Hat Clusters, you might consider Red Hat certification.
If you are planning to administer Edubuntu servers for a school district, you might consider LPIC.
And, there are reasons you might not want to do either in each of those examples.
You will get a lot of answers, from a lot of people. Those answers are probably all legitimate, because each answer is from personal experience.
It seems to boil down to Red Hat and LPIC as the two major certifications.
