Certification?

I've recently picked up some some Linux material from Barnes and Noble, and I am wanting to get a series of Linux certifications. When I initially looked at certs to get my foot in the Linux arena, I was looking at the LCIP-1 and then afterwords I wanted to go for LCIP-2. But, upon my book shopping I noticed that CompTIA offers a Linux+ certification. Now, I am familiar with CompTIA because I was certified in Security+ in December, but I am not sure if their Linux cert is actually reputable. So, now I draw the question. Which cert is worth getting. LCIP-1 or Linux+? And if you have a preference, please state why. Thank you.

I am in charge of hiring for a team -- and I do not base my decisions on Certifications at all. Yes, they are good eye candy on a resume' but all they prove to me is that you can look up Certifications that are related to the job you are applying for,.. meaning,.. unless I want to go through the hassle of checking, I have no way of knowing that a certificate is valid. I hire according to the experience explained, and only after a thorough interview and technical hands-on test to prove that someone is able to do what they say they are.

There are exceptions to my rule, in that when I hire a sub-contractor, I will make sure that the individual is certified in the area I need help in. This is because 500+ an hour kind of requires me to do some in-depth checking on a candidate.

But for general hire employees -- the hands on test and interview are the only things I am interested in.

And of course, this is coming from someone who holds/has held 10+ certifications in my career.

As a side note: isnt linux+ and the lpci-1 the same thing now since Comptia partnered with LPI?

I'll have to look into whether or not they are the same, but I am not going into the programming field, they are just as you described them...."Eye candy on a resume." I just want my employer to know that I am familiar with it, nothing more. I am trying to put together a diverse portfolio for my post military career and I figured that familiarization with Linux would be handy, and since the Army is paying for my certs I had might as well get a couple that at least look good. Can anyone answer the Linux+, LPIC question though?

That'll work then.

Under this program, CompTIA will adopt LPI's Level One certification exams (LPIC-1) for its CompTIA Linux+ certification. This innovative program will enable successful candidates to earn both the new "CompTIA Linux+ Powered by LPI" certification and the existing LPIC-1 certification.
Because of this, I would say they carry the same weight.
