Any of you certified?
 

How many people that read these forums actually have a linux certification? Which ones do you have and did you find it useful?

I have my Linux+ from CompTia, I took it as a way to help learn the OS and acutally did learn a lot. What about the rest of you?

Well I am not certified. Yea, you read that right. :)

I never felt the need to get one 'coz I've been using Linux since 97 and so I've learned alot by first hand experience.

I will be getting my Linux+ this summer. I think that I may be the youngest person to take the test.

Good look on your Linux+ test when you take it. It was pretty easy and I learned more about the OS then some of the books/man pages/documentation then I had picked up. It was very interested.

Planning to take LPIC1 in the next few weeks.

I doubt the certification will do me much good job-wise (never know though?). One useful thing about certification is that there are bits of Linux I know well and bits I don't know at all, just because I've never had to use them personally; or I've been lazy and used the Distro tool so I don't know what's going on under the covers. Certification is a good way to broaden my knowledge. LPIC1 has given me some useful knowledge (I've been working through the O'Reilly LPI book to revise); I expect LPIC2 will stretch me a lot more.

My school gives out A+ Certifications in their Computer Network Technician course. Very cool. I'm planning on getting that in two years, and my Linux+ or LPIC1. Or maybe both if I have the money. Linux+ seems easy enough for me too take it right now too. :)

Well, I am unemployed, but I'm just joking about there being a connection (I was an Apple tech who just got laid off.)

BUT, I do want to stress that I still consider myself quite a newbie as far as Linux is concerned. The Linux+ test was very basic, and the LPIC tests (2 of them) were difficult for a beginner (I failed 1 of them once and had to retake it) but not for any person who is experienced with Linux (or Unix for that matter).

I can install Linux, get basic services running, I have configured Postfix, and can write really quick, terrible shell scripts, but that's about it!

Anyway, the point is that I learned a lot from the tests, but I am not ready to be anything close to a Linux Administrator. Perhaps an assistant admin. Anyone who posts answers frequently on LinuxQuestions could probably pass these tests in a New York minute, I'm sure.

I am still looking for study guide for LPIC 2, by the way, in case anyone has ever seen any.

Taking the RHCE next month
 

I'm on the RHCE programme because, whatever else any one has to say about specific distros, I really like the RedHat flavour. It also helps that they have market visability and that means something to the management types in my org: which means I can blag loads of training.

I recently sat the RHCT just to find out what to expect from the RHCE. Well, it's not for newbies and a simple Q&A prep will do you no good. I've been using Linux for a year or so and found the RHCT quite easy - and fun :-) (I don't think that breaches the NDA I signed)

I also managed to pick up some excellent RedHat specific tips from the examiner.

I'm booked in on April 23rd for the RHCE - I hear it's quite an experience. 2.5 hours troubleshooting - 1 hour Q&A - 2.5 hours setup and config. I'm really looking forward to it

I'll let you know how I get on. I'll be spending the next few weeks :study:

Haven't acquired any Linux specific certs yet. I will probably go after Linux+ and/or LPIC1 during the summer. I'm leaning toward LPI right now. It would complement my newly acquired A+ and Network+ certs.:cool:

I am planning on taking the LPI this summer. I don't think Linux+ will be of much value.

Having taken both LPI and Linux+, I can say that you really don't need to know much to pass Linux+. For the first part of LPI, you get the option of choosing a supplemental questions between Redhat and Debian concerning installation procedures. I picked the Debian route and all the questions concerned the different options in dpkg. I rarely use it (you have apt-get so why would you), so the only option I knew off the top of my head was -i. But I took it cold turkey at a Linuxworld Expo, $20, and things the contents may have changed from the time I took the tests, but I would still recommend anyone to take LPI rather than Linux+. To me, Linux+ doesn't carry much weight.

but I hope to get linux+ then lpi and work tward a sun cert afterwards or RHCE i need to get a *nix job asap as a jr admin or somthing to give me more direction? who knows where i will end up but you cant know too much Linux+ is next though. This stuff is actually kinda fun i am such a geek...
