I have a squid proxy2.6 stable 6 server in RHEL 5.
And my server hardware is Dual core with Dual CPU Intel Xeon processor and 4 GB physical memory size.And Internet connection speed is 1 MB.
And the squid cache_mem is 100 MB.
In this above hardware and internet speed the website are open very very slow or, not open at all at the user end while surfing.
Please help me how can i increase the performance of this squid proxy server or, i need to change the configuration in squid.conf or, need to increase to cache_mem from 100 to 256 or, more, and if need to increase the size then how to increase?

My Squid server is running with 5GB cahe with 1mbps connection.
Change the following in squid.conf file
cache_dir ufs /usr/local/squid/cache 2048 16 256 and see. Check all the time squid.out file in /var/log/squid
