Installation Freezes At 90%
Hi.
I'm currently running off of a Thinkpad r40e, and I can't seem to get Linspire to install correctly. Whether I try to install, update, or anything, the progress bar freezes at 90%. It drives me nuts. Is there any way to fix this and get the damn OS working? Thanks, Dan. |
Can you try booting into the Dignostic mode and report the error message it's displaying ?
|
When I try to install it will often "pass out" as well but what I usually do to keep it "awake" is to occasionally just move the mouse around and it seems to keep it active. Yes, I know this sounds crazy and assinine but it has worked for me....numerous times!

To Cloudy: It doesn't work that way, Diagnostic mode is only for before the actual installation procedure, is it not? My freeze happens after the main splash screen and all the options.
To Jake: Ha, I've tried that, believe me, it just doesn't seem to work. It waits 5 seconds, sitting on 90%, before I locks up with no error. I found a reliable person that I could in fact ship my laptop out to, but my parents said no, which pisses me off so much you wouldn't believe. Dan. |
OH, you are the 14yr old at the other forums! I didnt bother with the thread much! Have you simply tried a different distro to see how it does?

I mean HOW do you know you can trust this person ? do you personaly know him or is this just someone you've met online ? You should be carefull since there are a lot of dishonnest people out there. Oh, and since it's a Laptop it's very possible the laptop isn't working with Linspire (had the same thing with my Packard Bell EasyNote only that one didn't even boot, and it was not working with a lot of Linux distro's). So maybe take jakes advise and try a diffrent distro (I would advise using a Live CD first like Knoppix, that way you can see if all the hardware is working and if it actually works before you try to install something). You can also headover to the official Linspire forums with your problem if you want (be sure to post some details on the Laptop then). Not trying to offend the fine people here but there are more people at the Linspire forums so there is more change of somebody beeing able to assist you (Including Linspire staff). just a thought though. |
Hey cloudy,
He has posted at the other forum, unless I am mistaken! He is the 14yr old that pvdl was going to help.... right? |
Try disabling the hibernations, screensaver etc in the bios before trying again.
If you need to move your pointer around, I suspect you are actually keeping the computer awake. |

I just recently downloaded Linspire 5.0, checked the md5sum, and burned it off to disk. First attempt at install produced a hang at 90% as well. I did some google searches and found some other references to this 90% mark. Some dealing with the MBR, some dealing with HD positions on the IDE bus. I took out all my HDs except the one i wanted to install it on (a 200GB IDE seagate). That didn't change anything, still stalled at 90%. I thought i would try the LiveCD portion of the disk, just to make sure my hardware was at least compatible (as recommended by the linspire website). That booted and ran for 2 days just fine. I went at the disk with fdisk and dd hoping that linspire was just confused with some weird partition table or something, that too resulted at a 90% hang. I even went so far as to install windowsXP and then attempt to install linspire (thinking that that upgrade path is a common one and would be "well supported"). That too produced a hang at 90%. I'm completely out of ideas!!! support.linspire.com is acting up for me (blue error error html pages) when i attempt to start a support ticket as well :( Anyone? ARGH - Chad |
