Mplayer + dvd codec?
I pop in a DVD, then I use GMPLAYER to open the DVD disc. Well, it just keeps reading and reading and reading and reading and reading and I can't do anything but physically shut off my computer and reboot. Do I need a codec?
How did you link it? Did you just make a symlink from /dev/cdrom to /dev/scd0? Also, is your DVD a SCSI device or did you enable SCSI emulation? If no to the last question, then it will be called something like /dev/hdc.
If you did do the symlink thing, then just delete the old symlink (type rm /dev/cdrom and the prompt) and make a new one (type - from the /dev directory - ln -s hdc cdrom) and that should fix it. There should be an option in Mplayer to change which device it read, though, but I don't know how to do that.

I did something in the console by reading another post but I do not exactly remember what I did.
But for GMPlayer, I just went to the preferences option and used /mnt/cdrom2 as my DVD drive. LIke I said earlier, it just reads and reads and reads and doesn't do anything but lock up my computer.
It is not a SCSI and will try those techniques you mentioned

well, I changed it to /dev/hdd....
Still did the same thing: just reads the DVD over and over and over and over and over and stalls my computer and it crashes.
Any other suggestions? i'm thinking maybe I am lacking a DVD codec?

I'm trying to install the "real" MPlayer from the website rather than from the Mandrake CD, which I originally did.
HOwever, I keep getting the message "requires libpng.so.2"
Well, I typed this in google and downloaded NUMEROUS libpng files from all different versions and this file is nowhere located in my /usr/lib/ directory
Can someone just post a DIRECT link to the correct file? This is really beginning to annoy me and take up my whole day.
