Check what protocol the ISP you want uses, and configure Linux to use it. Some ISP's have their own protocol (like NetZero) that might give you a hard time.
BT works fine. Anything where you just use the default windows dialer+the info they give (no AOL dialer crap).
Kppp is a very nice linux dialer app, you simply enter the account data and away you go
(After maybe installing modem drivers)
