Question installing RH 7.1 in vmware

I am trying to install RedHat 7.1 in vmware win2000 pro is my host os. RH install locks up as it’s probing something i think when trying to do a regular GUI install i get messages at bottom like this:
Running anaconda -please wait
Probing for mouse....
X Configur failed

Something like that. but even when i use the boot options text it does that running anaconda ... and probing for mouse .
anyway it locks up and i get an error from vmware:

vmware workstation panic:
AIO: winnt_cdrom: setfilepointer() for e: failed: 0x83

I didn’t have any problem with RH6.0
Has any one had this problem or anyone know a solution?

this thread might give some details with redhat 7.1 and vmware, not sure if it will help your spcific problem but you never know, i beleive there is some kind of kernel conflict that is distributed with 7.1 and vmware that causes much problems. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ghlight=vmware

I have had problems with Red Hat 7.1 installs when I tell it
to install all packages. It just hangs when it goes to format the
disk.

Could that possibly be the same VMware issue, or is this actually something wrong with the RH7.1 install?

Thumbs up

First off you need a lot of memory!!!! Running swap drives on two OS's at once on the same drive is bad. Second you should tweak windows to the max, and set the registry to not use any virtualmemory (pagging file or swap space) untill it has used up all avaible physcial memory.Then open up the control panel and make sure the VMWare ethernet adaptor is installed .If not click on add new hardware blah blah . Then on installing LINUX you have to install in text mode {Boot: text) enter. after installion be sure to install the VMTools while LINUX is running.Hope this works I run it But on a ADVSERVER Cluster with a lot of resources. The shareware programs for tweaking without using REGEDIT are on the next posting.

Cacheman works well and will let you see how much memory is avaiable to windows. The other and most recomened tweaking program is Xteq X. You might be able to find these programs at www.ZDnet.com.com If not let me know and I will post them for you or let you know where they can be found..

I'm afraid that I am having the same problem.
I'm using a Dell Inspiron with DVD/CDROM drive
under W2K.

Don't seem to be able to get round the problem.

I added the couple of lines to the .vmx config file as suggested
but that did not fix the problem. I think we have another problem
as there was no mention of the installation getting this PANIC message.

Here was one suggestion I found on the VMWARE web site.

Known Issues

Installation sometimes hangs for no apparent reason
Because of a bug in early versions of the 2.4 Linux kernel, installation of the guest operating system may hang for no apparent reason. The bug has been fixed in kernel 2.4.5. Distributions based on this kernel should install without problems. For earlier 2.4-series kernels, a workaround is available.

Power off the virtual machine and close the VMware Workstation Window. Open the virtual machine's configuration file (.vmx file) in a text editor and add the following line:
cdrom.synchronous=TRUE
