sharing internet from a windows 98 machine to a Red Hat Linux machine

hello,
i want to share internet from a windows 98 machine to my

RedHatlinux 8.0 machine. please tell me how it is posible?

i have a usb scanner & a usb printer also, can i make them run in
RedHatLinux8.0?

For the internet sharing, you can use the proxy server on the window 98 machine. You can download a free "proxy server" from the "download.com" and configure the software according to the user manual. Then, to configure the mozilla browser on your Linux, go to edit->preferences->advanced->proxies and fill up your proxy server's address and port and that's it.

well this is a windows issue, not a linux one. firstly forget about using a rpxy, that's just annoying, you want some nice expensive windows software such as winroute which will actually forward internet traffic. having to set up a proxy is just annoying. the best solution is, of course, to set linux to be the router, that's a doddle. but anyway, once you have windows set up, just set the gateway on the linux machine to be the IP of the win98 box and that should be all there is to do on the llinux side really.

If you have 98SE you can install Internet Connection Sharing on your Win machine. Then configure ethernet adapter on your box to got IP via DHCP ... it should work, I did it long time ago on a W2k machine and it worked !

when I need to use ICS (now I'm using a broadband connection and an hw router), it worked flawlessly. I don't remember things that didn't work. However, it will be possible that it wouldn't work on other systems .. it's always MS .. but why don't try ?

If your using dialup then good luck. DSL or Cable is so simple, but not fool proof. A few more details please.

1. Which box has the modem? Internal or external? And is it: Dialup? DSL? Cable?
2. Hows your network set up? What equipment is used?
3. Who is your ISP?
4. Never give out your ip addresses!

As others have pointed out, your security will be much better if you do it the other way round. Some of the OPs also had very good questions. What type of connection are you sharing? If its cable or DSL, a LinkSys or NetGear (or other) router would be the best method. Very cheap and simple, I've seen used LinkSys BFSR-11's on ebay for $5. Couldn't be easier.
