Red Hat 8.0 Issues: Error 28 on boot

When i try to boot into red hat 8, when it goes to load up the kernel, i get the following error:

Error 28: Selected Item too big to fit into memory.

Anyone else have this issue?

I'm having the same problem. Unfortunately I don't have a fix for it yet. Here is my setup though.
I'm doing a fresh install of RH 8.0 on a AMD XP 2000 with a Asus A7N266 MB- Nvidia22d Chipset with sound, video and LAN built on the MB - and 256MB ram.
This is also a dual boot system with MS W2K. I'm using Grub as my boot loader. The HD is partitioned with 2gb FAT16 partition for booting then a 8gb FAT32 partition for windows and then a 10gb EXT3 partition for RH and a 512mb swap partition.

I have heard that I will need to recompile the kernel in single user mode for the AMD, but since I just installed last night I haven't got around to doing that yet.

weird, because I have an Asus A7N266-C motherboard, too.

I wonder if anyone with an nforce/asus nforce board has the same issue...

I recently purchased an A7N266-VM and have experienced similar problems on bootup with grub and lilo. Here is a quick overview my experience. Hope this is useful.

A7N266-VM
Athlon XP 2000+
DDR266 256MB (x1)
WD 7200 80Gig ATA100
Samsung CDRW & DVD drive (ATA 66/33 respectively)
Linksys 10/100 NIC (for network installations)

Problem:
- Error 28 on boot under grub ("Error 28: Selected item cannot fit into memory")
- Under Lilo I get the letter "L" and a locked system.
- Floppy rescue boots normally.
- System locks up when starting X after floppy boot but this is probably due to using the default 'nv' driver and wasn't a concern.

Attempts:
-Reinstalled with various configurations:
--- / partition 20Gig and 2Gig (to see if it was a hard drive capacity issue) -- NO CHANGE
--- from CD instead of network -- NC
-Transfered another working drive to this box -- NC
-Swapped memory locations -- NC
-Disabled all non critical chipset features in bios -- NC

For my sanity, I installed 98SE with full updates, drivers and patches (for OS and chipset) just to see if it would work. The box turns out to be an acceptable windoze platform: Q3A played fine, UT played fine but couldn't get the sound right (sounded good but seriously choppy). CD's played beautifully.

Conclusion:
The board works fine under 98SE and appears to work fine under RH 7.3 & 8.0 if you have a means to bypass grub and lilo. (CD, floppy...) Otherwise it will never boot and is almost as useless and troublesome as a WinModem...

I will be returning the board next week but for what I'm not sure yet. Anyone have a solid recomendation as a replacement. I will need to accomodate the rest of the components (memory, CPU, etc).

UPDATE: grub .93 (from CVS) solved the boot issue.

I installed Redhat 8.0 on my system ... Everything went on perfect during the installation.... No Probs ...

I selected GRUB as my Boot Loader ...

When my system boots ... Finished .. I get this ridiculous message :-

On the GRUB Boot Loader screen it gives "650k Lower / 26056K upper memory"... Even after such huge amount of memory this ridiculous error message comes.

I have tried replacing GRUB with LILO.... But LILO is one step ahead.... It wont even go past a lame "LI" on the screen and then the whole system hangs...

I have searched everywhere for some solution for this this problem. A lot of people are suffering ... But NO ONE has an answer. The RedHat support is paid...and their forum servers are DOWN... GRUB has such a lame site that I am sure they wont reply to my emails.
If anyone has solved this problem please HELP ME !!!

My System Configuration :
Intel P4 2.0Ghz, D850MV board with 256MB RDRAM,
20GB HDD, ATI Radeon VE 64MB VRAM,

I had the exact same problem with an ASUS A7N266-VM MoBo. I upgraded to GRUB .93 and was finally able to boot. You can get it from here: http://people.debian.org/~nobse/debi...ckported/grub/
