Input/Output Error

I've a problem with Fedora 2 + netqmail-1.05 setup.

I have two email server, based on Fedora 2 and installed netqmail-1.05 with original patches.

However, both of these servers created some "dead" email files. (I'm using vmailmgr, where each email will be one file.)

You will get "Input/Output Error" when you "ls", or "tar" these files. I ever searched through web about this, most of the replies is "your harddisk have problem... check syslog... there should be some error reporting... etc ". However, I found nothing in /var/log/messages. No Kernel I/O Error.. No symptom....

I'm sure that it's not the hardware problem. Coz one of these servers, i rebooted and the server unable to boot up. It sticks at /home scanning and found that there are some error in partition table. Finally, i formatted /home and it worked normally without any Input/Output error until now ( for 2 months already ). I think that those "dead" file lead the kernel to write in wrong sections and corrupt the partition table.

I doubt, is there any error in kernel ? IO related parts? where having problem when shipping with FC2 and fixed after up2date ?

Also, are there any ways to fix those "ls" Input/Output error without rebooting ? my filesystem is using ext3.

Any idea would help.. thx.
