Linux 2.6 problems with USB

I am running Debian unstable with kernel 2.6.5.
I have tried upgrading to 2.6.7, 2.6.8 and 2.6.9 and each time I have had problems using USB devices (which work fine under 2.6.5).

When I had hotplug installed, when I booted into linux with any of these versions, the machine hung at the point where hotplug recognised the USB devices (a MS Explorer mouse and Palm pilot).

I remove hotplug and replaced it with usbmgr. the machine now boots successfully, but the USB devices don't work
