Unhappy Boot Loader Vanished

Hi,

I have 2 hard drives: One has Windows XP Pro and the other has 4 partitions: Linux Ext. 2, Linux Swap, Linux Ext. 2 Extended, and a FAT32 to read from Windows. After installing Linux, it gave me a boot loader. A few weeks ago I reinstalled Windows XP and the boot loader was gone. My Linux partitions are still intact on the other hard drive of course, but I can't boot it. I would really like to know how to reinstall the boot loader.

Thanks,

kurt165749

reinstalling windows results in a new mbr, if you want your linux loader (grub or lilo) back you need to use your boot flops and reinstall lilo or grub form linux.....

Lol I for got to mention the distro...9.0 And would I really have to reinstall it? There has to be a simpler way. The original boot loader had to reside on my XP hard drive. Therefore if it was placed on ther once, there has to be a way to put it on there again.

"9.0" is a version number. What distribution are you using? RedHat, Mandrake, Slackware, SuSE etc?

if you are using redhat 9.0, you need to do the following

restart with installation disk 1

when the screen comes up asking whether you want
a graphical or text install, type linux rescue

it will search and mount your current filesystem on
/mnt/sysimage

command : chroot /mnt/sysimage
this changes your root to the mount point of your
previous install. then you just do

/sbin/grub-install

you might want to check /etc/grub.conf to make
sure that both OS's are listed

reboot, and you should be ok

PS...I make the same mistake and had to go through this,
a good hint is to just fdisk your Windoze partition

Thank you gr. Sorry for being so undescriptive...I wrote the post and my first response very quickly. Yes, I have Redhat. I'll try what was suggested and I'll be back with the results.

grcunningham's suggestion should work fine. It is a good idea to put the distro you are using in your profile then it will show up next to your posts without you having to worry about it.
