i am trying to get my computer to recognize my DWL-122 in mandrake 9.2. I have downloaded the driver from www.linux-wlan.com and have successfully unpacked it and all. At a point in the './Configure' command it asks for the path to the kernel source (with the default bein [usr/src/linux]).
being the newbie that i am i go ahead and accept the default.

It comes back with a message saying 'usr/src/linux is incomplete or missing'. upon inspection of the /usr/src/ directory i see that there is nothing in it. OK so there is my problem. I am assuming that /usr/src/linux is the location of the kernel source. I believe that when i installed MDK 9.2 the kernel source was not installed.

Where do i get it from -- ie what disk is it on and what is the path of it
What are the commands that i need to get it from the cd to the /usr/src/linux directory.

Will this work?

You might as well upgrade to the latest kernel and it's source while you're at it.

Easy load up package installer and type kernel. Match the kernel version when you type "cat /proc/version" at bash or console screen. Next you need to install gcc compiler. Also match the same version compiler that mandrake compiled the kernel with. Usually its gcc version 3.2.

Sure, just download the source for your version, which the command "uname -r" will tell you. I believe the original 9.2 kernel was 2.4.22-10mdk. The newer kernels fix bugs and security vulnerabilities, however, and there are also customized versions for specific purposes. I'm using 2.4.22-26mm, for example, which is the preemptive multimedia version.

mmm....No offense you are that stubborn. The KERNEL SOURCE is on the CDs. Just run Mandrake Installer package and type kernel. Check the source code package. geez...what is so hard about that.

I'm pretty sure 9.2 download edition didn't include the kernel source.

I found it its on the second CD. The files are kernel22-source-2.2.20-9mdk.i586.rpm, kernel-multimedia-source-2.4.22-21mm.1mdk.i586.rpm, or kernel-tmb-source-2.4.22-21.tmb.1mdk.i586.rpm.

It will be stupid if Mandrake did not include the kernel source code because they include a few compilers.

well as you can see it is clearly not me and as 'crito' already said he doesnt think that mandrake included the source on the download edition -- of which i have. and number two i see that you are using mandrake 9.0 as i am using mandrake 9.2, do you think there might just be a difference?

i downloaded this file:

from a website and went to install it on my linux machine but the software installer came back and said that these files have already been installed.
now what?

That's the precompiled kernel you already have installed. pbone has several links where you can download the source for it but, like the page says, it's obsolete now:

As to whether 9.2 included the kernel source, all I can say for sure is sources are on CDs #4 and #5 of the powerpack edition I purchased. I've heard others complain about the download edition not including those CDs however, and I took their word for it. It was discussed on one of the other Linux boards LQ competes with so I won't link to the thread, but you can find it easily with google.
