I'm sorta new to all: started with PCLOS, easy to use and get started. Tried Fedora that came with LINUX FOR DUMMIES and it did not work right away. D/L the newer version and things went alot smoother. Some apps were not found in PCLOS so went back. Then tried Mandiva (?) that I did not running. Then Jeremy was trying to help me and mentioned Slackware. So I got out of all of those and d/l Slack 12.0 and all I got was the terminal prompt and was lost at that point. Now I have installed Slack 13.1/64 bit on my Dell 1545 laptop. Finally got the gui XCKE up but not able to make a wireless connection of the last 4 days. I just don't see where it is done. I tried to create another user logon without luck. I have it showup somewhere but don't understand how to get it to show at the logon screen. Somewhere I found something to setup the lan card but can't find it again. Like so many other newbies we get something, load it and expect it to work right away. So that was taken off and PCLinux reloaded. Due to ignorance; I try to do things that make sense to me and do the reading, maybe, if I don't see a way to get things done by visiting each menu item in: system settings, settings or something that points to configuring components/functions to get the computer working. No, I'm not educated enough to type commands from a tty prompt and get frustrated if that is expected. Yes, I look for the easy way to get things done and the least effort to get there. I'm a little of the gaming type, but love to work with maps and photos. No expert there either, just fun to do. My overall desires: find a linux OS that works with ease and meets my needs of everyday use. So far my best experiences: LinuxMint 10.1/64bit, OpenSUSE for Education and PCLinux. I will try to take the time to read more in the future.
