Question "/usr/libexec/cups/filter/hpcups failed"

CUPS 1.4.4, HPLIP 3.10.5: print spools job, generates error and stops.
Have re-emerged CUPS, GHOSTSCRIPT, HPLIP with no change. Also, using the web client to Add a printer results in "looking for printers" and hangs.

hp-check shows errors that seem unrelated.

2.6.28-gentoo (non-graphic build) using an HP PSC 500 All-in-one printer.

I've had problems in the past with HPLIP and firmware, producing this error, solved by running 'hp-setup -i' as root. (The graphical version of hp-setup failed to do the job properly, and I don't know why.) It'll do no harm to try, anyway.

Solved the CUPS Problem

Thanks for your reply. I tried hp-setup and was not successful.

I did manage to get my printer going again. Here is what I did:
  • Re-emerged: cups, ghostscript, hplip
  • Tried the cups web client to get a better picture of the problem
  • Used webmin to remove the flawed printer and created a new one

Webmin seems to be a bit more complete in handling these types of errors, even more that the cups web client.

Very frustrating problem that a lot of ideas don't seem to help with. I don't know the cause exactly. I suspect it may have been the result of another emerge or unemerge.
