terrible performance with xorg 1.7 and nvidia

whether I'm in KDE4 or fluxbox, all 3d games run but they're completely unplayable. performance is absolutely horrific.

older nvidia drivers won't load. I've also tried nvidia driver 195.30 but it won't load either, complains about GLX not being able to be initialized.

stuff:
Code:
packages:
[IP-] [ ~] x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-190.53-r1 (0)
[IP-] [ ~] x11-base/xorg-server-1.7.3.902 (0)

glxgears:
1663 frames in 5.0 seconds = 332.588 FPS
1671 frames in 5.0 seconds = 334.043 FPS

kernel:
2.6.32-gentoo

lsmod:
Module Size Used by
nvidia 8863594 24

You've forgotten to switch from the OpenGL implementation that ships with X to nVidia's proprietary one. Run the command 'eselect opengl set nvidia' as root to fix it.

the ebuild does that after installing the package.

The ebuild hasn't auto-set the OpenGL implementation as long as I can remember. It has always printed a message telling you that you need to, though.
