I don't know what any of that means, this install has deviated so far from the gentoo install docs that I don't know what i am doing. I really need paths to files that you want me to post and the explicit commands you need me to run. The only experience I have in working with the kernel was running "make menuconfig" and copying the kernel to the boot partition.

here is the output of "cat /usr/src/linux-2.6.29-gentoo-r5/.config". I actually passed it through "grep -v ^\#" to remove comments

In fact, I see that you have enable them

CONFIG_AGP=y
CONFIG_AGP_AMD64=y
CONFIG_AGP_INTEL=y
CONFIG_DRM=y
CONFIG_DRM_I915=y

Can you double check that the i915 option is selected as module ?

I checked my configuration from "make menuconfig" and found that i915 is "built-in" instead of as a module.

What should I do next?

Make then module and rebuild your kernel and after that reboot.

Post this after that :

Code:
# lsmod

I rebuild the kernel with the feature added as a module, then rebooted.

Code:
gentoo ~ # lsmod
Module                  Size  Used by

jimbo1708,

What does
Code:
uname -a
show. The date/time is the date and time that the running kernel was made.
Is it what you expected ?
You may have messed up installing your new kernel.

Your lsmod shows that you have no modules loaded, which doesn't look right.

That's why I asked that he recompile his kernel and I would like to see if he has i915 module or something else like the drm module.

Also, can you post the command that you use to compile and also to install your new kernel plz ?

NeddySeagoon,

Here is my output
Code:
gentoo ~ # uname -a
Linux gentoo 2.6.29-gentoo-r5 #5 SMP Fri Jun 26 07:49:31 EDT 2009 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.00GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
gentoo ~ #
Thank you for your help on this too.

-------------------------------

This was the code I ran to compile the kernel. I got it from following the gentoo docs at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-...ickinstall.xml

Code:
gentoo etc # cd /usr/src/linux
gentoo linux # make menuconfig
gentoo linux # make -j2
gentoo linux # make modules_install
gentoo linux # mount /dev/sda1 /boot
gentoo linux # ls /boot
boot  grub  kernel  lost+found
gentoo linux # cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/kernel
gentoo ~ # ls -l /boot/
total 3633

Sure, Here it is.

Code:
gentoo ~ # cat /boot/grub/grub.conf
# This is a sample grub.conf for use with Genkernel, per the Gentoo handbook
# http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=10#doc_chap2
# If you are not using Genkernel and you need help creating this file, you
# should consult the handbook. Alternatively, consult the grub.conf.sample that
# is included with the Grub documentation.

So, when you compile your kernel, make sure that you have run this command before :

Code:
# mount /boot
Because if not, then you will endup with an invalide kernel.

For the record, don't touch your /boot partition after a clean reboot and can you post this :

Code:
# cd /boot
# ls -la
I'm sure that you compile your kernel the right way but your /boot partition is not mounted, so when you reboot, then you endup with an old kernel.
