Introductory Gentoo help?

I'm experimenting with a Live Gentoo dvd and have a few questions that I can't find info on.

1- Any decent guides available on a sneakernet (type of) install?

2- When I " mkdir /mnt/gentoo/usr

cp -a /usr/portage /mnt/gentoo/usr "

gets me an error of "file or directory" not found from the live disk attempt install.

Thanks for looking at this thread!

If I were you I would just follow the handbook.

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/

You need to install a stage3 tarball, unpack it and install the latest portage snapshot.

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handboo...?part=1&chap=5

I have heard of people copying binaries from the liveDVD to install, but I have always just used the procedures in the handbook.

As to the DVD not having a /usr/portage directory, there is no need for one.

The only supported way to install Gentoo is described on the Gentoo handbooks.

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/

Pick your language, your architecture, and read on. If that procedure is not ok for you then you should probably look elsewhere. If you want to get a taste of Gentoo without getting your hands dirty, try Sabayon. But be warned that Sabayon is not Gentoo and we (I) don't know anything about it. If you want to try Sabayon and need support then you should ask on their forum.

I'm going to make sure that the LFS manual is "98% a list of base applications to compile exercise" before I get back to the Gentoo Manual. Gentoo does not I repeat ,does not look like something for learning but a O.S if you are already an expert. I was recommended Gentoo by someone that has a thorough understanding of Linux but I think Learning from Gentoo is a coincidence more that intentional. If I want to learn more about raw methods to use a network I would be better off reading a guide on that first. The Gentoo manual appears to be a list of steps from (a to b) and does not have much of an overview. The work they do is admirable but probably not for me at this time.

Thanks for the replies!
