Install Gentoo With System Rescue CD?
Hello,
I am thinking of taking a shot at gentoo. I have seen on some threads people using system rescue to install gentoo. I know that sys-rescue is based off of gentoo but I guess I don't quite understand how an install of sys-rescue would equal a gentoo install. Sorry if this is a stupid question. What is the advantage using system rescue over the gentoo minimal weekly builds? Thanks |
Hi there! Firstly, let me assure you that it is NOT a stupid question at all. :) The reason that many people suggest using the SystemRescueCD to install Gentoo is that it is Gentoo-based, more up-to-date than the official releases, and that Gentoo can be installed from within any Linux environment that has a console.
Basically, you will just download the System Rescue CD, burn it to a disc, boot it, and install Gentoo as normal, using the Gentoo Handbook. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns regarding the installation process, or more macrocosmically, Gentoo as a whole, please feel free to post them here or on the Gentoo fora. :) Take care. |
If'n you wanna save a cd, use usb to boot sysrescue cd from
it's easy, fat32 or ext2/3 |
Gentoo-Kalos thanks for the info. So really someone using system rescue to install is just using the live cd to provide the environment, nothing is actually used from the sys-rescue cd in the install process?

Have a look at the alternative install guide, section 3 - Knoppix Installation.
It's generic for all liveCDs. Personally I've never seen the point or the need. |
syg00, thanks, I missed that when looking over the docs available. Ok this makes sense now. Hopefully I'll get a chance tomorrow to try this out. Thanks for the help.

You can also use an already installed distro, for example if you have suse installed you could use it instead of a livecd to install gentoo. The process is exactly the same in any case. |
