WHat do you get if you run dpkg -l gnome-session? Here's what I get un ubuntu 8.04.3
Code:
c@CW8:~$ dpkg -l gnome-session
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Installed/Config-f/Unpacked/Failed-cfg/Half-inst/t-aWait/T-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name                              Version                           Description
+++-=================================-=================================-==================================================================================
ii gnome-session 2.22.1.1-0ubuntu2 The GNOME 2 Session Manager
If it doesn't show "i" in the first column then it's not installed and you need to install it. Maybe gnome-light doesn't install it.

check if it is really there?
Code:
# which gnome-session
/usr/bin/gnome-session
Code:
# eix -sI gnome-session
[I] gnome-base/gnome-session
     Available versions:  2.22.3-r1 [M](~)2.24.3 (~)2.26.1-r1 (~)2.26.2 {branding debug doc elibc_FreeBSD ipv6 policykit tcpd}
     Installed versions:  2.26.2(03:18:51 09/03/09)(branding ipv6 -debug -doc -elibc_FreeBSD -policykit)
     Homepage:            http://www.gnome.org/
     Description:         Gnome session manager
Never run as root - also not in virtual machines.
It doesn't really make things easier.
