gentoo luks encrypted root partition - lots of trouble (with initramfs)

I'm having a hell of a time here. I'm using genkernel because of its initramfs generation. The exact command:
Code:
$ genkernel --menuconfig --luks --no-splash --no-clean --kernname=mykern## all
I'm trying to have as many features be modules as possible (why wouldn't I?) Although I have tried including everything directly into the kernel. I've also tried to be very aggressive in only including the few drivers I need, however I've also tried to be a little more lenient.

My grub entry looks like:
Code:
title	Gentoo
root	(hd0,0)
kernel	/kernel--mykern01-x86-2.6.30-gentoo-r6 root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc ramdisk=8192 crypt_root=/dev/sda4 real_root=/dev/mapper/root
initrd	/initramfs-mykern01-x86-2.6.30-gentoo-r6
What's happening is that when I'm prompted for my LUKS password, it's rejected. (Lets assume I'm DEFINITELY typing the correct password here). Does this have something to do with my keyboard driver? I've also tried making sure I included all of the cryptographic options.

One thing to note: I've ALWAYS included dm-crypt (under device drivers -> multiple device driver support -> device mapper -> crypt target) and I have been exluding raid in the same screen because I don't need it. But I have not been enabling cryptoloop support (as I understand it, that is something different).

While I am at it:

1) in menuconfig is there a way to search by either module name or device models that are listed in the description? It should be very easy to me to get exactly the drivers I need by looking at lshw and/or lspci -v, but I'm having trouble with menuconfig's search feature.

2) when I want to clean up my mess after failing to create a good kernel/initramfs I'm a) removing stuff from /boot, and b) removing stuff from /lib/modules, is there anything else?

Did you write your own initramfs for this or use genkernel? I would recommend that you write your own, when I was trying to get my LUKS encrypted disc to work with the genkernel initram, it failed everytime. I don't know if this was the same reason, but it failed. Try your hand at a basic initram, then build it into the kernel.

I suspect that if the error comes after password input, you are not entering it correctly, right? If you would like a basic initramfs to work from, I would be happy to supply you with the one I am currently using.

Hmm, I wonder if it's a bug in genkernel somewhere. I am definitely entering the password correctly. You can follow my troubles here: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t...de671fc35024c6

When I drop to the shell after my password fails and I take a look at /proc/crypto, the incorrect algorithms aren't there. No matter what combination of configs and settings I do.

I guess I'll try to roll my own initramfs. What do you mean by build it into the kernel? Did you use a particular guide (on the Gentoo wiki perhaps) when you first did this?

OK. So I have read up on your issue, both in this forum and the gentoo forum. I would suggest that you try using the kernel used in the gentoo install cd. Just copy/paste that into your boot directory. It should have the ability to load your encrypted disk.

Use that with the initrd made from genkernel. See if it works.

If you want to try to build your own initrd, which I would recommend, take a look at these two articles:

Gentoo WIki: Booting Encrypted System from USB Stick
and
Gentoo Wiki: Initramfs

Here is the content of my init file for my homemade initrd:
Code:
!#/bin/busybox

#mount proc and sys
mount -t proc none /proc
mount -t sysfs none /sys

#Do your stuff here:
echo "Activating mdev"
mini_udev
echo "Loading encrypted drives."
cryptsetup -T 5 luksOpen /dev/sda luks
echo "Scanning LVM drives."
lvm vgscan
echo "Activating LVM drives."
lvm vgchange -a y

#Mount rootfs
mount -o ro /dev/lvm/root /mnt/root || rescue_shell

#cleanup
umount /proc
umount /sys

#boot the real thing:
exec switch_root /mnt/root /sbin/init

rescue_shell() {
        echo "Something went wrong, dumping you into a shell."
        busybox --install -s
        exec /bin/sh
}

mini_udev() {
        echo /sbin/mdev >> /proc/sys/kernel/hotplug
        mdev -s
}
Mine is set up to allow for lvm too. I like dynamic disk sizes

Let me know how this goes. or if you have further questions I might be able to help with

Hey Sploot, I actually built my own kernel. And built my own initramfs using http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Root_...Crypt_and_RAID, but skipped the RAID and LVM stuff. During boot, it failed saying that it coudln't find a root device. I don't know if it ever even got to my init script.

The grub entry I used looks like the one in that wiki - most importantly, there are no kernel arguments like root=/dev/ram0...

Any ideas? In the meantime, I will try to beef up my init to look a little more like yours with the rescue shell and mdev. I'd be nice to know if this lack of root device is an issue with the kernel or initramfs.

Would you post for me the output of:
Code:
zcat /proc/config.gz|grep -i initramfs
Additionally, what is the content of your init file in your initram? Finally, would you give me the contents of your gruf.conf?

Attached is a picture of my frozen screen during boot. Additionally, my scroll lock and caps lock lights flash. In another config the boot process stopped just after detecting some USB devices, however it wasn't a kernel panic, it just hung. I was also playing around with using/not using mdev. But as of now I can't get past this kernel panic.

Sorry for the delay in my response, but it seems that you are missing key pieces of your grub.conf. This may not be ALL that is currently wrong with your setup, but lets start there. The screenshot indicates that you are lacking a root argument.

I am also assuming that you are running the Gentoo system and not the Arch Linux system. So, consider reading up on how to configure grub to run with a initramfs and crypt.

Here is the appropriate line from my configuration file, that you could consider as a starting point:

kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.29-gentoo-r5-video root=/dev/ram0 real_root=/dev/lvm/root

Yours will vary because you are not implementing lvm. Hope this gets your boot process a little further, at least

I was anxious to get on with it (after several more attempts) and just decided to go with an unencrypted system. After about a week of waiting for software to compile, I've decided that Gentoo might not be for me. I'm back with Arch. Thanks for your help though, sploot.

Sorry it didn't work out. If you try again sometime, I'll do my best to help

Well, I thought about that. I could get a faster processor to decrease the compile times, but then do I really need the optimization? =P
