eth0 does not exist on install

Ok, I have been running slackware for a while, and thought I'd give gentoo a try. Anyway, after booting the system, I get network interface eth0 does not exist, please verify kernel module or driver.

I have a onboard Atheros L1E 10/100/1000 LAN. I have read in other posts about installing the tulip module in the kernel.... I don't know if that is for this chipset or not. eitherway, when I enable as a module and try to load, I get the same error. Any help would be greatly appreciated
