error message just after chroot stage

I do:
livecd portage # export PS1="(chroot) $PS1"
(chroot) livecd portage # mkdir /usr/portage
Following the manual fairly close I didn't expect to get the message:

mkdir: cannot create directory '/usr/portage': File exists
I don't understand, was the mkdir put in there to ensure the directory exists even though we made it earlier?

I am not sure, I don't remember if /usr/portage is in the stage file nowadays. Make sure you have mounted the destination partition (you can check the output of the "mount" command, of "df" if you prefer).

If everything is mounted as it should, and the /usr/portage directory is there, there's no problem. It is empty, isn't it?
