emerge system

Just read about "emerge system" or "emerge -e system" which, as far as I understand, recompiles the basic system. So my question is, is it safe to emerge my system? Or could I possibly end up with a non-bootable system and I should follow the saying "if it's not broken, don't fix it"?
Of course I would later run revdep-rebuild and etc-update.

It won't harm. But be sure you preserve the settings you modified by hand when doing etc-update. In any case, are you doing that because of something or is this just another of those threads looking for magic optimization or something?

Well, I did a pretend and noticed that this would also upgrade baselayout (which I thought was upgraded, but it wasn't...), and a few other packages, so as I don't care about compilation time, I thought why not. I understand that there will be no "optimization" (since stage 3 has already taken care of that for me ) but a few system upgrades should be a good thing, right? Anyway, I'm going to backup my configurations and proceed to see what happens
