Zephram Cohrane = Linus Torvalds ?

Do so many Linux fans like Star Trek because of the clear similarities between Zephrane Cochrane & Linus Torvalds? or is it the other way around?

I dunno...have you ever seen them in the same place at the same time? ;)

Maybe it's Torvalds who will invent the warp drive! :D

(Additionally, this probably belongs more in /General.)

Moved: This thread is more suitable in /General and has been moved accordingly to help your thread/question get the exposure it deserves.

Well, if Torvalds invented the warp drive, he probably would put it under the GPL and make it open source, only being hardware instead of software.

Jeebizz 04-22-2010 07:24 PM

There is no way that Torvalds is any way like Cohrane. The two couldn't be more different. All you need to know about Cohrane is to see the 1996 Star Trek First Contact movie and plainly see that the only reason he built the warp engine was for profit from the start. Linus however made Linux as something to do, and profit was not the main priority at the time.

Cohrane would have never GPL'd the warp engine, it would most likely be under a proprietary license.

Plus Cohrane was a drunkard, and somehow I don't think Torvalds is a heavy drinker, if he even drinks at all.

I was just thinking the same thing as jeebizz when I read the first post in this thread
I also doubt one could do much mental heavy lifting drinking like Zephrane Cochrane did in the movie

In Star Trek they are always happy to share technology with anyone, as long as they have it already (otherwise it could contaminate their culture so it violates "The Prime Directive")

Both are sheer geniuses, (genii, genix, genices?) err ok Cochrane is a genius & so is Torvalds. Both are big men with big personalities. The opposite of the stereotypical genii (uh oh, here again). Comments like "Real men don't make back-ups. They ftp it and the world downloads it" make me suspect that Linus is not shy of enjoying the odd tipple from time to time, perhaps not as extreme as Cochrane. & the whole shaving thing!!

I think HollyWood messed with the story a little as they wouldn't notice or understand GPL if it bit them on the bum. Since their motives are greed & profit then those thing MUST be good right? because aren't we all good people? Since it's good & we are all good people then everyone must be only driven by greed & profit. Also it's well known that HollyWood bends the truth "a bit", just look at Hiawatha & "The Jungle Book" i mean they clearly weren't actually there and took the existing accounts very much "on advizement" with a touch of "artistic licence". Anyone who was there would agree with me i'm sure ;) lol

I'm not sure this thread belongs in "General" surely it belongs in "Linux - Enterprise"?

To quote the Discworld novels: "This is a play on words or a pune"
