Pardon my intrusiveness, but I was wondering who here actively uses Linux at their job?

And for those of you who do use Linux at their job, what skills were you asked to have for you job?

Background info: I am an enlisted member of the US Air Force, I currently have 5 years left on my enlistment and think its time to start teaching my self more and more about Linux because I would like to work in the Linux environment when I get out.

P.S. You do not have to state the company that you work for unless you want to brag about where you work. Also I am not trying to collect data and stats on users of this form.

I work at a place that uses a Slackware box to filter out spam because our lotus notes server is too old to use rbl and we don't have the funds to upgrade. Before I got there there was no *nix. It was an AS/400 server and 120-150 Windows machines/servers. This is for an 80-100 bed (I think) hospital.

I use to be a CRE for a J2EE - webapp. Pretty fun stuff, I was fresh out of tech-school and my teacher got me the job, only to find out 3 months later he was quiting and I would take on most his daily tasks.

8 solaris e-450's an old HP. My brand new (at the time) RS6000. I handled daily builds :mad: and deployment of our app across several different testing Env. (three boxes usually, Solaris for Oracle, a server for documentum, than a Tomcat server. Maintained / wrote scripts to do this in a
quick way ... of course I also handled packing up our release for our customers.

administration of a NFS, NIS, LDAP (solid never had to touch it really so I didn't learn much about it) and maintained CVS. I learned so much it was great.

All good things come to an end and 2 months prior to the hole floor getting laid off (over 30 of us.. all the people except for two from my state that worked on this project), I found myself teaching my job to off-shore workers.. :tisk:

They sold the company and that day we were all handed pink slips.


I saw it coming but what can you do I guess. This really makes me soooo very upset that companies are doing this. So.... anyways I am back on the hunt for another good job...... :D

hehe...I'd love to work in an environment where I had to use linux but I don't. In fact, I graduated from college with a degree in computers and I found myself working a job that has nothing to with computers.

I'm a slot attendant at a casino and I make good money but I hate the job. I considered moving to the IT department but everything runs off of AS/400 which really irratates me. I like to quiz the IT guys when I see them. They don't know I'm into computers and they try to use all this jargon to be impressive.

My job sucks....

We're stuck with using Win2k for my job as the proprietary webbased software we use is designed mainly for use only in Windows and IE which is dumb cause half the developers have dual boot systems using Windows and Linux. All of our servers are Linux and some Solaris servers.

But recently I am doing the redesign of our intranet for support department and they would not give me any great software to build the pages except Frontpage which I refuse to use. So I used notepad and a crap graphic editor until I talked them into letting me install Linux on my secondary machine, which they approved.

So now I have a Linux desktop and Windows desktop at work.. one for doing my main job and the other to do my intranet updates using The Gimp and mainly a text editor to update the webpages. :)

I use / introduce nix wherever I can - I'm a network manager who moonlights as an IT consultant.

Skills-wise, I've only been asked twice because most of the places I've worked didn't have *nix before me (I don't count $hoary_old_mainframe). Once I was asked to do a generic vanilla kernel compile for a desktop and another time it was just a bunch of random admin questions about logfiles / daemons / etc.

For my own workstations I've always used *nix (or dual-boot). If I'm questioned I usually say "whether I use Linux or Windows, I'm still the one who'll end up fixing it and linux needs less fixing."

If I'm contracting or on my own network I use Linux for servers wherever possible - why spend £ on a proprietary OS when you can save money or buy better hardware with that money?

I am IT prof. at elken int. In charge of managing 5 Red Hat servers. I am trying to get an ok to change them over to slackware.

Everybody in the company uses except to the technically inept... You know sales, HR, the boss... ;)

You can find it all where I work: Tru64, AIX, Solaris and of course Debian GNU Linux on my work box. It sure is funny when the windows users have viri, spyware and their daily patch from M$ to deal with all the while my little old 400Mhz just hums along quietly. I use Evolution instead of Outlook, Mozilla instead of I.E., Bluefish instead of Frontpage, OO instead of Office, GnomeMeeting instead of Netmeeting.

P.S. I open all of the "suspicious" emails in our office. :)

i am a weather guy in the AF also bru. we use a RH9 box as a workhorse for the shop. we are downloading over 1000 images, unmeasurable amounts of text data per day and it feeds a windows server the same information cause it can't handle that much downloading itself. now this is just an extra duty but considering the fact that i am the only one that knows how to work in the environment and the fact that i am ready to change duty stations i am being pushed to port everything to a winxp iis box. HA i say. but that is the extent that my job will ever consist of having a linux cause everyone that i work with is scared of Linux.

I wish I had a job.
