Your Favorite Non-*nix OS

Excluding Linux, the BSDs, and all other Unices and Unix-like operating systems, what is your favorite operating system? I have tried to list the most well known in the poll.

Ahhh.. Isnt QNX just linux with a custom microkernel and microdisplay driver?

and wouldnt that make it a *nix?

XavierP 09-28-2003 04:34 PM

And OSX is Unix based

kev82 09-28-2003 04:56 PM

what happened to RiscOS??

Tarts 09-28-2003 06:26 PM

I chose DOS, i used it alot when i was on window's.

Aside from Linux, I use OS X and BeOS. Since OS X has a BSD core, I chose BeOS. (Which may even be making a comeback, though not from Be itself.)

The general look and feel. I began to like it when it was better than almost all the other OSs in features, performance, and consistency, and I like it now because it reminds me of the good times.

When BeOS came out, the Windows standard was Win95, and Be was miles ahead. Fast boot times, a journaled FS before Linux had it, and a zippy GUI. Unfortunately they fell behind, way behind, and now the follow-ons to Be, Zeta and OBOS (OpenBeOS) are trying to recreate what BeOS was when Be the company died. Only then can they move to the next level.

I haven't personally used QNX; but, as far as I knew when I made this poll, it was not simply a customized Linux kernel. Browsing QNX's website, I found no information implying that the QNX OS's microkernel is somehow derived from the Linux kernel, nor have I found anything implying that it is a Unix-like operating system. You're still probably right, though.

Indeed, Mac OS X's kernel, Darwin, is derived from a BSD kernel. However, the many versions of the Mac OS that came out before Mac OS X were not *nix operating systems.

What about Atheos?

I know - I was just being facetious.

Note to self - grow up sometime.

I happily voted for windows!
