YouTube puts advertisements on their videos (unless you have software to block them), and they charge for that.

They also collect play statistics and pay royalties to PROs = Performing Rights Organizations, such as BMI, ASCAP, and SESAC.

... which is why "Youtube" shows up on my quarterly royalty statement.

Indeed, so a YouTube uploader is creating an advert for the product of the month. Making a video may be cheap but making a good one is not and it must occur to anyone, surely, that including content by somebody else may cause issues? Do people really just include music or other content by other people in their videos and assume that that will not be costly?
